An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture to commemorate the Giro d’Italia cycling race passing through Bulgaria. The display is presented by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, celebrated Bulgarian cyclists, and prominent photographers.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, some of which are being shown for the first time. These images serve to recall significant moments and notable figures that have placed the capital, Sofia, within the history of the popular sport. Among the displayed photographs is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is noted as the only Bulgarian to have completed the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful cyclist over the past fifteen years.
Visitors to the exhibition can also view images documenting Bulgaria’s major Olympic achievement in cycling: the sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race at the 1980 Moscow Games. The display offers a comprehensive visual overview of cycling’s history and impact on Sofia, drawing attention to both modern achievements and past sporting milestones.
