Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday, marking the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are newly revealed, chronicling significant moments and key figures in the history of cycling within the Bulgarian capital. The collection serves as a visual tribute to the sport’s deep roots in Sofia. Among the photographic highlights is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, noted as the sole Bulgarian competitor in the Giro d’Italia and one of the country’s most successful riders over the past fifteen years.

Furthermore, visitors can view images commemorating Bulgaria’s notable achievement at the 1980 Moscow Games, where the nation secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The display aims to celebrate the rich sporting legacy that has connected the city of Sofia to the global world of professional cycling. By showcasing these historical images, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at the dedication and accomplishments of Bulgarian athletes across decades of competitive cycling.
