Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” debuted on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was jointly presented by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, renowned Bulgarian cyclists, and prominent photographers, alongside representatives from the Sofia Municipality.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and key personalities that have placed the Bulgarian capital within the history of the popular sport of cycling. Among the displayed works is a photograph featuring Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian to have completed the Giro d’Italia circuit and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years.

Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s major Olympic success in cycling, specifically commemorating the sixth-place finish achieved during the 100 km team road race at the 1980 Moscow Games. The event highlights the deep historical connection between the city of Sofia and the sport. By showcasing this collection, the organizers aim to preserve and celebrate the legacy of cycling achievements that have shaped the sporting identity of Sofia.

The display offers visitors a comprehensive visual journey through the notable moments of the sport in the capital.
