An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday in the vicinity of the National Palace of Culture. The event was timed to coincide with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The presentation of the exhibition was jointly organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation.
The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, prominent Bulgarian cyclists, and renowned photographers. The display features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are newly revealed to the public. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and influential personalities that have shaped the history of cycling within the Bulgarian capital.
The collection provides a visual retrospective of the sport’s journey in Sofia. Among the highlights featured in the exhibition is imagery related to Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian athlete to have completed the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the past fifteen years. Furthermore, visitors can view historical photographs documenting Bulgaria’s notable achievements in cycling, specifically recalling the nation’s sixth-place finish in the 100km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The display offers a comprehensive look at the deep connection between the city of Sofia and the discipline of competitive cycling.
