Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was jointly presented by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, alongside distinguished Bulgarian cyclists, prominent photographers, and representatives from the municipality.

The exhibition features over one hundred unique photographs, many of which are newly revealed, chronicling significant moments and key personalities that have placed the Bulgarian capital within the history of the popular sport of cycling. Among the photographic highlights is a portrait of Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the sole Bulgarian competitor in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful cyclist over the last fifteen years. Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s major achievements in the sport, notably including images from the 1980 Moscow Games, where the country secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race.

The collection serves as a comprehensive visual tribute to the sport’s history in the region. The display aims to celebrate the deep connection between cycling culture and the identity of Sofia, offering visitors a detailed look at the achievements of Bulgarian athletes across various levels of competition.
