Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” was inaugurated on Monday, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers, as well as representatives from the municipality.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and notable personalities that have placed the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, within the history of the beloved sport of cycling. Among the photographic highlights is a portrait of Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years.

Furthermore, the collection includes images documenting Bulgaria’s most significant Olympic success in cycling: a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Games. The display provides a visual archive of the sport’s impact on the city, offering both historical retrospectives and modern tributes to the athletic achievements associated with Sofia. The event underscores the deep connection between the city and its sporting heritage, drawing considerable public interest.
