, Bulgaria and Continue the Change Divided over Idea of Deeper Unity

Disagreements emerged on Monday among the parties comprising the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) coalition regarding the scope of future unity. Yes, Bulgaria intensified its proposal to transition its existing informal cooperation with Continue the Change (CC) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) into a formal, potentially unified political entity. However, Continue the Change maintained that significant distance remains from a single-party structure, despite acknowledging shared objectives.

Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-leader of Yes, Bulgaria, stated that the focus remains on voter priorities, particularly judicial reform, while affirming that dialogue with CC is ongoing. He noted that while the three groups have worked informally since February 2023, the discussion now includes formalizing the coalition, potentially leading to full unification. Ivaylo Mirchev, also a co-leader of Yes, Bulgaria, backed deeper integration, suggesting that voters anticipate a more consolidated political project.

Conversely, Nikolay Denkov, a deputy leader of CC, pushed back against the immediate merger. He asserted that while goals are shared, the methods for achieving them differ significantly. Denkov stated that the parties are “very far from becoming one party with Yes, Bulgaria,” preferring to work together while each group retains its distinct strengths.

Denkov characterized the proposed paths—either a common party or a complete separation—as “very extreme.” While confirming that cooperation continues on key fronts, such as presidential elections, he indicated that any decision regarding separate parliamentary groups would ultimately rest with the individual Members of Parliament in Bulgaria.
