An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture. The display was timed to coincide with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The event was presented jointly by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation.
The opening ceremony was attended by officials, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers. The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which have not been previously published. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and notable personalities that have shaped the history of cycling in the Bulgarian capital.
Among the photographic highlights is a portrait of Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian cyclist to have completed the Giro d’Italia and the country’s leading rider over the past fifteen years. Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s significant achievement in the sport during the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, where the nation secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The display offers a comprehensive retrospective look at the deep connection between the city of Sofia and the sport of cycling.
By showcasing both contemporary achievements and historical milestones, the exhibition solidifies the city’s place within the broader narrative of international sporting excellence. The collection allows visitors to reflect on the enduring passion for the sport within the local community.
