The issuance of new Bulgarian passports commenced on Monday, following the opening of the new Administrative Services Centre of the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate in Sofia’s Mladost 4 borough. According to officials, this facility marks the culmination of a project that began in 2022. The new centre implements centralized personalization, which is designed to enhance security by meeting the highest industry standards.
While the personalization process is centralized, the submission of applications will remain decentralized. Officials stated that this upgrade not only strengthens national security but also reinforces Bulgaria’s standing as a significant international partner. Furthermore, the new Bulgarian identity card issuance was recognized as being among the best in Europe.
The new technological capabilities of the centre will facilitate electronic identification services. Regarding travel documents, Bulgaria will now issue 48-page passports valid for ten years, although the existing five-year passports will continue to be available. Although there are adjustments to the associated costs, these increases have been stated to align with current production expenses.
Experts noted that this comprehensive modernization effort represents a long-term commitment to adopting advanced technology for identity documentation. The overall goal was to implement the highest possible security measures for all Bulgarian identity documents.
