An art exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture, marking the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening event was attended by notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, acclaimed Bulgarian cyclists, and prominent photographers, alongside representatives from the municipality.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which have never been publicly shown before. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and notable personalities that have placed the Bulgarian capital within the history of the popular sport of cycling. Among the displayed works is a photograph by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is noted as the sole Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the past fifteen years.
Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s major achievement in Olympic cycling, specifically the sixth-place finish secured during the 100 km team road race at the 1980 Moscow Games. The collection offers a comprehensive visual narrative, paying tribute to the dedication and history of athletic achievement in the region. The display solidifies Sofia’s connection to international sporting culture through the lens of cycling history, presenting a rich photographic tribute to the sport’s enduring appeal.
