Journalists Helped Shape Impact of April Uprising, Journalist Boyko Vassilev Says

At a conference held in Panagyurishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, journalist Boyko Vassilev asserted that the efforts of three key journalists significantly contributed to the uprising’s success, which ultimately paved the way for the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), featured Vassilev, host of the Panorama program on Bulgarian National Television, discussing the historical impact of these figures. Vassilev identified Zahari Stoyanov, who documented both the successes and tragedies of Bulgaria’s history; Hristo Botev, who publicized the seizure of the ship Radetzky and the circumstances of his death, actions that resonated across Europe; and Januarius MacGahan, who brought attention to the atrocities committed in Bulgaria before an international audience.

“Words are truthful when they speak of both light and shadow,” Vassilev stated. He referenced a poignant account from Stoyanov’s notes concerning Georgi Benkovski, observing the burning of Panagyurishte and the betrayal of those who supported him, yet maintaining that his ultimate objective had been achieved. Commenting on the BTA’s series of discussions, Vassilev clarified that the events were intended not as mere lectures, but as dialogues linking historical moments to contemporary Bulgarian life.

He noted that even during the 50th anniversary of the uprising, Bulgarian society exhibited deep divisions, serving as a warning applicable to the present day. Vassilev concluded that the April Uprising represents an “eternal political Bulgaria that we continue to see,” underscoring the enduring relevance of the period’s events.
