An art exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday, capitalizing on the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was jointly presented by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside notable Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which have never been publicly shown before. These images commemorate significant moments and influential personalities that have contributed to the history of cycling in the capital city. The collection serves as a visual tribute to the sport’s enduring connection with Sofia.
Among the photographic highlights is coverage featuring Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as Bulgaria’s most successful rider over the past fifteen years and the nation’s only participant to complete the Giro d’Italia. Furthermore, visitors can view archival images detailing Bulgaria’s notable achievement at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, specifically a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The display aims to preserve and celebrate the rich sporting heritage of the city.
By showcasing these historical photographs, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at the depth and history of cycling achievements within the framework of modern Sofia.
