Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in the city’s Boris Garden Park, commemorated the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The activity took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where participating students were divided into teams to engage in a historical scavenger hunt.

The teams navigated the area, searching for monuments dedicated to national heroes and answering questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event served to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, providing students with an immersive way to experience history beyond standard classroom learning. The routes followed by the students connected key monuments honoring revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

As they answered historical questions, the participants collected pieces that formed a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon completing the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical knowledge they had gained. The game’s concept was developed with the input of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The initiative successfully engaged students by guiding them through the footsteps of the nation’s heroes.
