Students from Sofia schools participated in a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” an initiative organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event was held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The activity took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in a structured search for monuments dedicated to national heroes.
As Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated, the event aimed to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, motivating young people to experience history outside traditional classroom settings. During the activity, participants followed routes connecting key monuments to revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. By answering historical questions along the way, the teams collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising.
Upon completing the educational walk, every team composed a brief message addressed to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical knowledge they had gained. The concept for the game was developed with the involvement of history teacher Emil Jassim and forms part of the Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program. This initiative is executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.
The structured nature of the game allowed the students to trace the footsteps of historical figures, reinforcing civic education while celebrating the legacy of Bulgaria’s heroes.
