Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Sofia Municipality hosted “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical educational game, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event took place in Boris Garden Park within the capital, engaging local students in an immersive learning experience. Along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, teams of students participated in an activity designed to connect them with Bulgaria’s national heroes.

The curriculum required participants to trace routes linking to monuments dedicated to revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To deepen their understanding of Bulgarian history, the students answered questions related to the era while searching for these historical markers. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the initiative serves to commemorate a significant act of courage 150 years ago, thereby encouraging students to explore history beyond traditional classroom settings.

As part of the game, participants collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising by successfully answering historical inquiries. The educational exercise culminated with each team composing a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the knowledge they gained during the walk. The game concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The event successfully guided the students through the footsteps of Bulgaria’s defining heroes.
