Inspect Landslide near Pamporovo, Consider Temporary Bypass Road

A team comprising geologists and engineers recently inspected the section of the third-class road (III-8641) situated between Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been significantly impacted by a massive landslide. Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, confirmed that the inspection aimed to evaluate options for temporary stabilization and the construction of a bypass road to restore traffic flow pending a permanent solution. The working group, which included technical experts and representatives from the road maintenance company, determined that the most feasible immediate alternative involves utilizing an existing road that passes above the landslide zone.

Kushev stated that authorities will now inspect adjacent properties and analyze the potential for widening the current route or establishing temporary passing points to accommodate traffic. He indicated that a definitive assessment regarding the viability of this temporary bypass is expected by the beginning of the next week. While the initial observations suggest the terrain is in relatively stable condition, no visible active deformation has been confirmed, and a final assessment remains pending.

The estimated length for this potential temporary road is approximately one and a half kilometers. Officials also examined an alternative route situated below the landslide, following a forest road, but this area has also been compromised by displaced earth masses and is currently unusable. Experts noted that the scale of the landslide is extensive, which inherently complicates the implementation of swift recovery measures for the main road.

Efforts to analyze and establish a functional alternative route remain ongoing.
