Insurance Company Employees, Transport Sector Representatives Protest in Sofia, Demand Financial Regulator’s Resignation

Representatives from the transport sector, alongside clients and staff of DallBogg: Life and Health Insurance, assembled in Sofia on Thursday to protest and demand the resignation of the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC). The joint demonstration took place outside the National Assembly and the Council of Ministers, coinciding with the start of the 52nd Parliament session. The primary demands articulated by the protesters included an immediate cessation of actions they characterized as “repression” against the insurance company, and a halt to the rising costs associated with mandatory motor third-party liability insurance.

Protesters indicated that if these demands are not addressed, further demonstrations would occur, potentially involving other industries affected by escalating compulsory insurance expenses. The protest highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the regulatory oversight of the sector. In early April, the FSC imposed a ban preventing DallBogg: Life and Health Insurance from entering into new or reinsurance contracts, or extending existing coverage.

The FSC stated that this measure was implemented to safeguard policyholder interests and ensure the company’s solvency, citing alleged breaches of the Insurance Code and market conduct rules as the basis for the restrictions.

  1. It will be interesting to see how these disparate groups plan to exert pressure on the FSC.

  2. What specific actions or changes are the protesters demanding the Financial Supervision Commission implement if the regulator does not resign?
