Community Centres Have Bright Future, President Says

President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centre, which has operated for 170 years, maintains a bright future in the 21st century. She made these remarks during a meeting with the National Representative Committee commemorating the anniversary of the national centres. According to the Presidential press service, Iotova noted that these cultural hubs played a vital role in forming the Bulgarian community long before the modern Bulgarian State was reestablished.

The meeting was attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, other committee members, institutional and local authorities, and media representatives. Discussions focused on the necessity of establishing measures for the financing of public community centers, alongside the conservation and renovation of existing facilities.

Participants reviewed the legal frameworks governing the operation of these centers and expressed a strong desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centers. Currently, only one such branch exists in Edirne, originating from the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria. Iotova emphasized that the further development of Bulgarian community centers should be considered a priority for all national institutions.

Attendees expressed hope that the National Assembly and the new government would prioritize cultural policies. Committee representatives commended the President for her consistent support of the centers’ initiatives. The agenda also covered organizational details for the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova confirmed the full support of the Presidential institution.
