President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centre, a facility with a 170-year history sustained by Bulgarian patriots and cultural figures through educational efforts, maintains a bright future in the 21st century. Speaking at a meeting with the National Representative Committee on the occasion of the 170-Year National Community Centres’ Anniversary, she noted that these community centers played a role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the re-emergence of the Bulgarian State. The meeting was attended by Committee Chair Prof.
Nikolay Doynov, other Committee members, local and institutional authorities, and media representatives. Discussions focused on the need for measures concerning the financing of public community centers, as well as the conservation and renovation of existing building funds. Attendees reviewed the legal framework governing community centers and expressed the desire of Bulgarian communities abroad to establish public centers.
Currently, only a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria, exists in Edirne. Iotova emphasized that the further development of Bulgarian community centers should be a priority for all national institutions. Participants expressed hope that the National Assembly and the new government would prioritize cultural policies.
Committee representatives commended the President for her sustained support of the community centers’ initiatives. The agenda also addressed organizational matters for the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova confirmed the full support of the Presidential institution.
