President Iliana Iotova affirmed the enduring relevance of the Bulgarian community centres, noting that institutions like the 170-year-old chitalishte have a bright future in the 21st century. Speaking at a meeting with the National Representative Committee marking the anniversary of these cultural hubs, Iotova emphasized that these centres played a vital role in forming the Bulgarian community long before the establishment of the modern Bulgarian State. During the gathering, which included committee members, local officials, and media representatives, participants addressed critical issues concerning the financing, conservation, and renovation of these cultural centres.
Discussions centered on strengthening the legal framework governing their operation and addressing the desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centres. Currently, only one such facility exists in Edirne, serving as a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria. Iotova asserted that the further development of these national centres must be recognized as a priority for all national institutions.
Meeting attendees expressed hope that the National Assembly and the incoming government would prioritize robust cultural policies. Committee representatives commended the President for her consistent support of the community centres’ initiatives. The agenda also covered organizational details for the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova pledged the full support of the Presidential institution.
