To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality organized a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes.” The event took place in Boris Garden Park, following a route along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, designed for local students. The initiative involved teams of students navigating the area to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes. Participants engaged in an interactive process, answering questions related to Bulgarian history while following the footsteps of key revolutionary figures.
The route connected monuments honoring Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. By correctly answering historical inquiries, the students collected pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising. According to Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, the activity serves to motivate students by allowing them to experience history outside the traditional classroom setting.
Upon completing the walk, each team composed a message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on the knowledge gained. The game concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. This effort aims to deepen student understanding of the nation’s historical contributions by physically engaging them with the legacy of its heroes.
