Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov communicated his decision via a Facebook post, stating his intention to dedicate his full focus to the development of Stara Zagora. In his announcement, he expressed gratitude to his colleagues and wished them success, citing his desire to take full responsibility for the city’s progress.

Todorov’s departure follows a period where GERB achieved a relatively modest result of 13.38% in the snap parliamentary elections held in April. Shortly after the vote, on April 22, Todorov appeared at a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov. During this event, Todorov emphasized that GERB needed to maintain its established right-wing and anti-corruption identity.

This move comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission, and following the National Assembly’s unanimous reconfirmation of Boyko Borissov as party leader. At that time, Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would form a working tandem to support the party structures. GERB acknowledged Todorov’s resignation on Facebook, describing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party noted Todorov’s significant contributions as a mayor under GERB and stated that the party was undertaking an internal analysis to identify areas for improvement in its operations.
