Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Through a public statement, Todorov indicated that the decision was motivated by a desire to dedicate his full attention to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their collaboration while stepping down from the top executive body of GERB.

Todorov’s departure follows a period of political activity for the party, which recorded a 13.38% result in the snap parliamentary elections held on April 19. Just days after the vote, Todorov appeared alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov to outline the party’s strategy, emphasizing the need for GERB to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption profile. This resignation comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Commission, and while the party’s National Assembly had unanimously reconfirmed Borissov as party leader.

Following this, Borissov announced a collaborative structure involving Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, to work alongside party structures. GERB acknowledged the announcement via a Facebook post, accepting Todorov’s departure as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged his significant contributions, noting that he had been one of GERB’s most successful mayors in the region. GERB also stated that the party was conducting an internal analysis to identify areas for improvement in its operational strategies.
