Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov stated on Facebook that his decision was driven by a desire to focus his full attention and energy solely on the development of Stara Zagora. Todorov’s departure follows a period of political transition for the party.
GERB recorded its weakest showing of 13.38% in the recent snap parliamentary elections. Shortly after the vote, Todorov participated in a news conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the necessity of preserving its right-wing and anti-corruption profile. Although Todorov had recently been re-elected to the Commission, the party’s highest body, the National Assembly, unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader.
During the conference, Borissov announced a new operational structure, naming Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, as a tandem to assist the party leadership. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB issued a statement accepting his resignation as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged his contributions, noting that Todorov had been one of GERB’s most successful mayors and that much work had been accomplished for Stara Zagora through their collaboration. The statement concluded by mentioning that GERB had conducted an internal analysis to identify areas needing improvement within the party’s operations.
