Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Through a public post, Todorov stated that his decision was intended to allow him to dedicate his full attention and energy exclusively to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their collaborative work while stepping down from his role on the commission.

Todorov’s departure follows a period of political activity for GERB, which recorded its weakest performance at 13.38% in the snap parliamentary elections held on April 19. Shortly after the vote, Todorov participated in a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party leadership emphasized the necessity for GERB to maintain its established right-wing and anti-corruption profile. This announcement comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission, while the party’s highest body unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader.

During the press conference, Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would form a working tandem supporting the party structures. GERB acknowledged Todorov’s announcement via a social media post, accepting the move as a “personal act of responsibility.” The statement commended Todorov for his success as a mayor in Stara Zagora, noting the significant contributions made during their joint work. The party also indicated that it had conducted an internal analysis to identify areas needing improvement within its operational framework.
