Zhivko Todorov, the mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov stated via a social media post that his departure is a voluntary decision intended to allow him to dedicate his full attention to the development of Stara Zagora. The announcement follows a period of significant political activity for the party.
GERB recorded a result of 13.38% in the snap parliamentary elections held on April 19. Days after the vote, Todorov participated in a news conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the necessity of preserving its right-wing and anti-corruption credentials. This development comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission, while GERB’s National Assembly had unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as the party leader.
Borissov subsequently announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would collaborate on initiatives supporting the party structure. GERB acknowledged Todorov’s decision through an official post, framing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s contributions to Stara Zagora while also stating that it was conducting an internal analysis to identify areas needing improvement within its operations. The move marks a shift in the leadership structure following the recent electoral results for GERB.
