Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Through a personal Facebook post, Todorov stated that the decision allows him to dedicate his full attention and energy exclusively to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their collaborative efforts and wished them success.

Todorov’s departure follows a period of political activity for GERB, which recorded a 13.38% result in the recent snap parliamentary elections. Shortly after the vote, Todorov participated in a news conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the need to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption profile. The timing of the resignation is notable as Todorov had recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission.

Furthermore, GERB’s highest body, the National Assembly, had unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader. Previously, Borissov had announced that Todorov, alongside the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would form a working tandem to support party structures. GERB acknowledged Todorov’s announcement via a party post, accepting the resignation as a “personal act of responsibility.” The statement commended Todorov for his success as a mayor and acknowledged the contributions made to Stara Zagora during his tenure.

The party also noted that it was undertaking an internal analysis to identify areas for improvement within its operations.
