Language Classroom Will Open at Bulgarian Sunday School in Tatarbunary

A multimedia language classroom for studying Bulgarian will open on May 2 in Tatarbunary, Ukraine, at the Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche, according to Svetoslav Ivanov, Consul General of Bulgaria in Odesa. Ivanov stated that the project aligns with Council of Ministers Decree No. 224 of October 30, 2025, and the Programme for Supporting Organizations of Bulgarian Communities in Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Under this program, eight proposals were approved with support from the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Odesa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The proposal for the school, submitted by the Tatarbunary Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Society Rodolyubie, was one of these. The initiative intends to preserve and advance Bulgarian culture, including linguistic identity, by utilizing modern teaching tools suitable for contemporary needs.

Furthermore, it aims to encourage students of Bulgarian descent to acquire knowledge and maintain cultural connections with their ancestral homeland, Bulgaria. Ivanov noted the importance of this support, particularly as the school operates within a mixed-population area. The Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche was established in 2014 by the Tatarbunary Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Society Rodolyubie.

Since the 2016–2017 academic year, the school has expanded, opening three additional branches in Tatarbunary and Kiliia, and in the village of Novoselivka (Kiliia Raion). Beyond the core curriculum, the school offers workshops in folk dance, traditional instruments, folk singing, theatrical folk art, and applied folk arts, with 341 students participating in extracurricular activities and 45 teachers across the branches. The Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche is a member of the World Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad.
