Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within the GERB party, has announced his resignation from GERB’s Executive Commission. In a public statement, Todorov indicated that his decision was motivated by a desire to dedicate his full attention and energy solely to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their collaborative efforts.

This departure follows a period of political activity for the party, which recorded a 13.38% result in the snap parliamentary elections held on April 19. Shortly after the vote, Todorov appeared alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where he stressed that GERB needed to uphold its right-wing and anti-corruption identity. Previously, Todorov had been re-elected to the Executive Commission, and Boyko Borissov himself was unanimously reconfirmed as the party leader by GERB’s National Assembly.

Borissov subsequently announced a new working structure, proposing a tandem between Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, to assist with party initiatives. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB issued a statement accepting the resignation as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s significant contributions as a mayor within the GERB framework, noting the substantial work done for Stara Zagora. The statement concluded by mentioning that GERB had conducted an internal analysis to identify areas requiring improvement within the party’s operations.
