Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov stated in a personal Facebook post that his decision allows him to dedicate his full attention to the development of Stara Zagora. In his statement, he thanked his colleagues and expressed his commitment to focusing solely on the city’s advancement.
Todorov’s departure follows a period of political change for GERB, which secured a result of 13.38% in the snap parliamentary elections held in April. Shortly after the election, on April 22, Todorov appeared alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov at a press conference where they outlined the party’s future direction, emphasizing the need for GERB to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption standing. Previously, Todorov had been re-elected to the Executive Commission, while GERB’s highest body, the National Assembly, unanimously confirmed Boyko Borissov as the party leader.
At that time, Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would collaborate with party structures to support his efforts. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB acknowledged his decision via a Facebook post, characterizing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party noted Todorov’s significant contributions as a mayor under GERB and acknowledged the substantial work accomplished for Stara Zagora. The statement concluded by mentioning that GERB was conducting an internal review to identify areas needing improvement in the party’s operations.
