Ministry Secretary General “Under Pressure”, Politicians See Revenge for Crackdown on Electoral Crime

The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he had faced pressure following an incident reported via Facebook. Kandev claimed that on Thursday, he received multiple calls, including a message urging him to “go home.” He alleged that during these calls, he was informed that an individual nicknamed “Kartofa” and associates were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO). Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly supported the acting Secretary General, characterizing the alleged pressure as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO.

Gurov also criticized prosecutor Emilia Rusinova and associated figures, linking the incident to broader issues within the judiciary. Interior Minister Emil Dechev echoed the support for Kandev, asserting that “old cops” were employing improper tactics to undermine the Secretary General. Other political figures also commented on the situation.

Assen Vassilev described the threats against Kandev as “scandalous,” advocating for systemic judicial reform. Meanwhile, the Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform, referencing patterns of perceived state influence. The core of the controversy involves the integrity of the testimony provided at the SCPO and the source of the external pressure.

The Ministry of Interior and the caretaker government, according to Dechev, are committed to minimizing electoral crimes. The statements from the Prime Minister and Ministers framed the alleged actions against the Secretary General as part of a larger political contestation.
