Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated his and the caretaker government’s full support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov asserted that the public support for Kandev would be broad. Gurov’s remarks followed a statement from Kandev, who claimed he was subjected to pressure to resign.
Kandev alleged that individuals, including a person known as “Kartofa,” provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. In his view, this constitutes a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” The Prime Minister stated that a conspiracy has formed following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and secure millions of euros intended to undermine elections. Gurov specifically named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as being involved in this alleged conspiracy.
He characterized the situation as an act of revenge, extending a warning to those who act courageously and lawfully. Gurov further alleged that the “vendetta” is occurring at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, implicating prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who is noted as an associate of Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the prosecutor overseeing the caretaker government. The caretaker Interior Minister, Emil Dechev, previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia.
Dechev added that information from the Interior Ministry suggested Rusinova repeatedly crossed the border on trips accompanied by several individuals, sometimes including Petrov. Gurov concluded by addressing political opposition, stating that the government is aware of their efforts and is not intimidated.
