Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event took place in Boris Garden Park, utilizing the Prominent Bulgarians alleyway as its route. In the activity, teams of students navigated the area, engaging in a search for monuments dedicated to national heroes while answering questions pertaining to Bulgarian history.

Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, noted that the initiative serves to motivate students by allowing them to experience history outside the traditional classroom setting. The structured walk guided participants along routes linking to key revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. As the students progressed, they collected segments of a symbolic map of the uprising by successfully answering historical queries.

Upon concluding the journey, every participating team composed a brief message addressed to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on the knowledge gained throughout the game. The game concept was developed by history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The event successfully blended educational objectives with historical commemoration, guiding the students through the physical footsteps of Bulgaria’s historical figures.
