Speaking at a conference concerning the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), emphasized the crucial role of media in public discourse. Mitev stated that by organizing discussions on the April Uprising, BTA has taken an important step toward its audience, noting that media outlets must proactively connect with the public to remain effective. The conference, the final event in a series hosted by BTA commemorating 150 years since the April Uprising, focused on the necessity of historical understanding.
According to Mitev, to accurately assess the current situation and trajectory, one must examine both international contexts and national history. He argued that this broader perspective allows for a realization of the path traveled and achievements made. The Director highlighted the media’s significant influence on public opinion.
He pointed out that the participants of the April Uprising demonstrated deep faith in their cause and a willingness to make sacrifices—qualities Mitev suggested form the foundation of enduring narratives. He stressed that the April Uprising remains a pivotal, epoch-making event in the development of an independent Bulgarian state. Mitev also cautioned regarding national pride, arguing that it is frequently manipulated for various agendas.
He concluded by stating that it is the shared responsibility of scholars and the media to foster national self-esteem. This cultivation, he clarified, should stem from pride in the nation’s history and accomplishments, rather than an exaggerated sense of superiority, with the goal of continuous improvement.
