Speaking at a conference concerning the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, the Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), stated that organizing discussions on the event is vital for the media. Mitev emphasized that in the current environment, media outlets must take the initiative to connect with their audiences to maximize their utility. The conference marked the conclusion of a series organized by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
According to Mitev, understanding one’s present standing requires placing current realities within a broader historical context, necessitating an understanding of both domestic and international history. He highlighted the critical role of media in this process, noting that media narratives significantly influence public opinion. Mitev pointed to the participants of the April Uprising as examples of profound hope and a willingness to make sacrifices—elements he called foundational to many significant narratives.
He asserted that the April Uprising remains a pivotal, epoch-making moment in the development of a free and independent Bulgarian state. Furthermore, Mitev addressed the cultivation of national pride, cautioning that like history itself, national pride is susceptible to manipulation. He argued that the responsibility lies with the media and scholars to responsibly build national self-esteem.
This cultivation, he stressed, should focus not on perceived superiority, but rather on a genuine pride in the nation’s history and achievements, while simultaneously working toward continuous improvement.
