Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality organized a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes.” The event took place in Boris Garden Park, utilizing the Prominent Bulgarians alleyway as its setting. Groups of students participated in the activity, which involved navigating the area to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes. The initiative aimed to engage students by connecting them directly with Bulgarian history outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Participants were divided into teams and followed routes that linked key figures such as revolutionaries Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. At each stop, the students answered questions related to the period’s history and collected pieces of a symbolic map detailing the uprising. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, responsible for education and urban development, stated that the event serves to keep the memory of this significant historical period alive among the youth.

The educational concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is managed as part of Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, in partnership with the city’s Regional Education Directorate. Upon completing their journey, each team concluded the activity by composing a short message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the knowledge they had gained from following the footsteps of these national heroes. The event successfully provided the students with an interactive experience of Bulgaria’s revolutionary past.
