45 Years since First Bulgarian Ascent of Eight-Thousander: Himalaya’s Lhotse

On April 30, 1981, Hristo Prodanov reached the summit of Lhotse, the Himalayan peak at 8,516 meters. This ascent marked a significant milestone, as Prodanov became the first Bulgarian to summit an eight-thousander and the fourth individual to reach the height without supplemental oxygen. The climb was part of the “Himalayas 81” expedition, a Bulgarian national effort dedicated to the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State.

The mountaineers endured a demanding trek, progressing from Lamsangu to establish multiple intermediate camps, culminating at Camp 4 in the challenging ‘death zone.’

On the day of the summit attempt, a core group, including Prodanov, began the decisive ascent. After navigating difficult terrain, the group faced rapidly deteriorating weather, characterized by high winds, snowfall, and plummeting temperatures. Despite these severe conditions, Prodanov proceeded without oxygen, reaching the summit at 1:55 p.m.

local time. He planted the Bulgarian tricolor flag and recorded the success via radio communication. The subsequent descent was fraught with difficulties.

Prodanov, along with his teammates, managed the perilous journey back through the high camps. The expedition successfully concluded with all members returning to base camp. Prodanov’s achievement remains a notable feat in mountaineering history, solidifying his place in the records of high-altitude exploration.
