The fully renovated Alley of Freedom in Panagyurishte was unveiled on Saturday, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The 7-kilometer thoroughfare connects the outskirts of the town to the foot of the Apriltsi Monument in the historic area of Oborishte. The reconstruction was funded by donations exceeding EUR 2 million from Asarel-Medet AD.
The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, and regional officials. Mayor Gagov emphasized the significance of the location, stating, “This place is sacred. One hundred and fifty years ago, it gathered the finest people of the region—the courage and determination of our ancestors, who declared their sincere desire to be free and not live on their knees.”
Originally established in 1976, the alley connects Panagyurishte with the historic site of Oborishte.
The route begins as an asphalt path, transitions into a forest eco-trail, and culminates in a commemorative path leading to the monument honoring the First Bulgarian Grand National Assembly. Mayor Gagov presented a commemorative plaque to Dimitar Tsotsorkov, representing Asarel-Medet AD. Eng.
Nikolay Peltekov, Executive Director of Asarel-Medet AD, highlighted the corporate commitment, noting that the project was undertaken as a duty to the nation’s history. He stated that the initiative was intended to inspire future generations to maintain a spirit of patriotism and ambition, ensuring that the memory of the struggle for freedom endures.
