Alley of Freedom in Historic Oborishte Area Is Unveiled

The renovated Alley of Freedom in Panagyurishte was officially unveiled on Saturday. This 7-kilometer thoroughfare connects the outskirts of the town to the historic Oborishte area, terminating at the Apriltsi Monument. The reconstruction effort was funded by donations exceeding EUR 2 million from Asarel-Medet AD, marking a significant commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

The opening ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, local administrators, and representatives from Asarel-Medet AD. Originally constructed in 1976, the route links Panagyurishte with the deeply historic site of Oborishte. The path itself transitions from an asphalt segment at the town edge, continues as a forest eco-trail, and culminates in a commemorative route leading visitors to the monument honoring the First Bulgarian Grand National Assembly.

Local officials emphasized the site’s importance. Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov stated that the location holds deep significance, recalling the determination of ancestors who sought freedom. He presented a plaque to a representative of Asarel-Medet AD, acknowledging the company’s role in supporting the development of the area.

An executive director for Asarel-Medet AD noted that the project represented a commitment to the region’s heritage. They highlighted the dedication to maintaining the historical spirit and the spark of patriotism. The initiative was presented as a major contribution to the Fourth Revolutionary District, honoring the centennial commemoration of the April Uprising.
