Shows 247 Bomb Shelters in Bulgaria, 18 of Them Functional

Amid heightened geopolitical tensions stemming from the Middle East conflict, several European nations, including Bulgaria, have focused attention on the readiness of their civil defense infrastructure. The University Rescue Squad (URS), affiliated with the Bulgarian Youth Red Cross, recently published a map detailing the locations of civil defense and fallout shelters across the country to enhance public awareness. According to fire service data, Bulgaria possesses 247 designated civil defense shelters.

However, only 18 are currently reported as fully operational for their intended purpose, though the remaining facilities can be made functional within a week. Maintenance protocols require an officially designated person for each shelter, and the fire service conducts biannual inspections. In the capital, Sofia, City Hall reports that ten of the city’s 92 shelters have undergone overhauls in the last two years, with six more renovations commencing and the remainder scheduled for repair within four years.

These facilities are frequently housed in schools and kindergartens. URS volunteer Radinel Pargov noted that while some privately owned shelters are accessible, they are not included on the official registry as they lack fire service oversight. Pargov also highlighted that certain settlements within Bulgaria lack designated fallout shelters.

For large-scale protection, the underground Metro system in Sofia remains the most substantial resource, capable of sheltering over 900,000 people. Furthermore, the National Palace of Culture and underground tunnels provide additional capacity, illustrating the various measures in place concerning bomb threats and public safety within Bulgaria.
