Opens National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism with Event in Tryavna

BTA is initiating a nationwide series of discussions marking the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and celebrating Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” will take place in his hometown of Tryavna at the Slaveykov House Museum. The initiative, moderated by literary scholar Yordan Eftimov, will also be attended by the town’s mayor, Dencho Minev.

The campaign aims to prompt societal reflection on Slaveykov’s enduring influence and the period of modernization in Bulgaria, particularly focusing on figures associated with the “Misal” literary circle. Eftimov stated that the discussions, which will span all 45 BTA press clubs, involve literary researchers, educators, and writers. The broader goal is to encourage dialogue regarding how major intellectuals remain active within the nation’s cultural memory.

Coverage of the campaign will be featured in the December issue of LIK magazine, which will include reports from the discussions and a special section comprising 160 individual contributions. The event in Tryavna will also host Vijay Joshi, CEO of the Press Trust of India, reflecting a partnership between the two news agencies. Pencho Slaveykov (born 1866) was a pivotal figure in Bulgarian literature.

Despite becoming seriously ill at a young age, his work developed themes of social critique and democratic ideals, influenced by figures like Nietzsche and Heine. After studying philosophy in Leipzig, he worked as a teacher and was closely linked with the Misul literary circle before departing Bulgaria in 1911. His life and work continue to shape contemporary literary study.
