The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired new, high-specification equipment, enhancing its capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients, according to the hospital’s press center. Five complete sets of the new gear were purchased, which include vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and additional items such as defibrillators and suction pumps. These advanced systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained during long-distance transport.
With this new equipment, the MMA can conduct the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment while airborne. The gear is certified for onboard aircraft use and is ready for immediate installation, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies. The Military Medical Academy remains the sole facility in Bulgaria that combines specialized equipment with trained teams for air medical evacuation.
Operating in close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts that necessitate the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the MMA, stated that the new equipment significantly improves the ability to provide medical care in extreme conditions. He noted that air medical evacuation requires not only advanced technology but also highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic and high-risk environments.
The academy conducts regular training flights under varied scenarios to maintain high operational readiness and improve coordination between medical and aviation structures.
