Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has enhanced its capabilities for air medical evacuation by acquiring new, high-specification equipment, according to the hospital’s press centre. Five complete sets of advanced medical gear were purchased, which include vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and additional items such as defibrillators and suction pumps. These integrated systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained during extended-distance transport.

With this new equipment, the MMA is now capable of conducting simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment during flight. The purchased systems are certified for onboard aircraft use and are ready for immediate installation, allowing for a rapid response in emergencies. The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized equipment with trained teams for air medical evacuation.

In close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts that necessitate the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, stated that this acquisition significantly improves the capacity to deliver medical care in extreme conditions. He emphasized that air medical evacuation requires not only advanced technology but also highly trained personnel capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments.

To maintain operational readiness, the academy medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various scenarios.
