Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capacity for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification gear, according to the hospital’s press center. Five complete sets of advanced medical equipment have been purchased, encompassing vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps. These sophisticated systems are designed to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness during extended transport missions.

With this new inventory, the MMA is now equipped to conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment en route. The press release confirmed that the equipment is certified for use aboard aircraft and can be installed immediately, ensuring rapid response capability in emergencies. The MMA remains the sole institution in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with trained personnel for air medical evacuation services.

Working closely with the Bulgarian Air Force, the academy’s teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the MMA, noted that the new equipment greatly enhances the ability to deliver care in extreme environments. He stressed that successful air medical evacuation requires not only advanced technology but also highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk settings.

The academy maintains high operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various demanding scenarios, thereby improving coordination between its medical and aviation structures.
