A photo exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” was opened on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture on the occasion of the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The exhibition was presented by Sofia Municipality and Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, renowned Bulgarian cyclists, prominent photographers, Sofia Municipality representatives, among others.
More than 100 unique photographs, some of which have not been published before, recall some of the great events and personalities that have inscribed the Bulgarian capital in the history of one of the most popular and beloved sports. Among the photographs is one of Nikolay Mihaylov, the only Bulgarian to have finished the Giro d’Italia and the country’s most successful rider over the past 15 years. Visitors can also see images from Bulgaria’s most significant Olympic achievement in cycling at the 1980 Moscow Games, a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race.
