Describes Assessment as Key to Energy Efficiency Projects

Minister of Energy Traicho Traikov emphasized the critical role of proper initial assessment in the successful implementation of energy improvement projects. Speaking in Sofia at the National Meeting of Energy Efficiency Consultants, Traikov stated that inadequate preliminary work increases the cost and uncertainty of all subsequent steps. The meeting, organized by the Chamber of Energy Auditors and the Association of Bulgarian Cities and Regions, addressed national efforts to enhance energy performance.

Traikov referenced the European Union’s objective for the building stock to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. He stressed that this goal requires immediate action, noting that nations demonstrating early commitment to these standards attract substantial funding and support mechanisms. He cited Greece’s commitment to eliminating its coal industry by 2030 as an example.

While acknowledging that Bulgarian buildings rank among the least energy efficient in Europe, Traikov maintained that this situation presents significant potential for community-wide transformation. During the forum, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Dora Yankova, reported that the inclusion of lift upgrades within energy renovation projects is under consideration, particularly since approximately 80% of the country’s lifts are over 30 years old. Later, Traikov informed journalists that any future governmental measures designed to support citizens and businesses facing rising fuel costs would fall under the purview of a subsequent regular government.

The overarching message remained that rigorous initial assessment is foundational to achieving necessary levels of energy efficiency across the national building stock.
