Describes Assessment as Key to Energy Efficiency Projects

Minister of Energy Traicho Traikov emphasized the critical role of proper initial assessment when implementing energy improvement projects, stating that the work of energy efficiency consultants is central to the entire process. Speaking at the National Meeting of Energy Efficiency Consultants in Sofia, Traikov warned that flawed initial steps can lead to subsequent stages becoming more expensive and uncertain. Traikov addressed the European Union’s target for the building stock to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

He framed this goal not as a distant objective, but as an ongoing process. He further noted that countries demonstrating early commitment to meeting these standards tend to secure greater funding and support mechanisms, citing Greece’s plan to eliminate its coal industry by 2030 as an example. While acknowledging that Bulgarian buildings rank among the least energy efficient in Europe, Traikov framed this status as a significant opportunity for potential community transformation through targeted energy interventions.

During the forum, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Dora Yankova, announced that the possibility of incorporating lift upgrades into energy renovation projects is under consideration, following discussions with relevant state agencies and non-governmental sectors. She highlighted that approximately 80% of the country’s lifts are over 30 years old. In separate remarks to journalists following the event, Traikov clarified that any future governmental actions supporting citizens and businesses in response to rising fuel costs would fall under the purview of a future regular government administration.
