‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have jointly announced plans to introduce a no-confidence motion against the Government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This joint statement was issued online on Monday. The move follows the resignation of PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23.

The PSD issued a statement asserting that the resignations formalized the party’s decision to withdraw its political backing from Mr. Bolojan, arguing that he no longer possessed the parliamentary majority needed to lead the government. Marian Neacsu, representing the PSD, encouraged colleagues who supported the initiative to vote in favor.

Meanwhile, Petrisor Peiu of AUR clarified that the opposition group’s cooperation with the PSD was limited solely to the no-confidence motion, stating that AUR’s primary objective is to precipitate early elections due to concerns over the current government’s economic management. In response, Bolojan stated he would not resign and intends to continue fulfilling his mandate, adding that he is working on establishing a minority government. Amid this political instability, President Nicusor Dan held talks during the week of April 20–26 with leaders of the ruling coalition.

The President confirmed that the coalition rejected governance with anti-Western groups, specifically mentioning AUR. Discussions focused on key initiatives such as the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defence instrument SAFE. These matters remained central to the consultations hosted by the President on Monday with all governing coalition parties.
