Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by officials, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside notable Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are newly revealed, chronicling significant moments and prominent figures that have marked the city of Sofia in the history of cycling. The collection serves as a visual tribute to the sport’s impact on the Bulgarian capital. Among the displayed images is a photograph by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is noted as the only Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years.

Furthermore, visitors can view historical images documenting Bulgaria’s major achievement in Olympic cycling at the 1980 Moscow Games, specifically a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The exhibition provides a comprehensive look at the deep connection between the city, its sporting heritage, and the discipline of cycling.
