President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level consultations with the six parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a procedural step outlined by the Constitution, following which the President will assign the role of Prime Minister-designate. This appointment will be based on the candidate put forward by the largest parliamentary faction.
The sequence of the consultations is structured to begin with the leading political bloc, Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats within the 240-seat Parliament. Following this initial meeting, iotova will meet sequentially with the leaders of the remaining groups: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. These consultations represent a critical juncture in the nation’s political process, aiming to establish a governing majority.
Upon conclusion of the meetings with all parliamentary groups, President Iotova is expected to issue a formal statement to the media detailing the next steps in the government formation process. The political landscape has recently seen several key developments. Members of Parliament were formally sworn in on April 30, an occasion that also saw Mihaela Dotsova, representing Progressive Bulgaria, elected as the Chair of the National Assembly.
The scheduled consultations are therefore positioned as the immediate next step toward stabilizing the executive branch and moving forward with the formation of a new government cabinet.
